MEETING MINUTES OF NEAFT MERGER CAUCUS

THE BEGINNING

On July 5, 2008 at the NEA Representative Assembly in Washington D.C., a group of NEA activists met to found the NEAFT Merger Caucus, an organization that seeks to bring the memberships of NEA and the AFT together to speak with one powerful voice.

Our statement of purpose, composed at the RA, expresses what we believe one powerful voice will accomplish for our members.

The NEAFT Merger Caucus believes there is greater strength in the unity of NEA and AFT as representatives of school workers in a single democratic union with shared common values and goals.

With a potential membership near four million, our merged organization will be present in every community. The ability we will have to speak with one voice to deliver our message to the American people will be unmatched. We will be able to shape the political and social agendas for the benefit of the nation's children.

As the nation's largest union, we will be uniquely positioned to join other unions in determining the social agenda of our country. Our size will allow us greater power to address issues ranging from education reform, member's rights, healthcare, and pension security to other critical issues that concern our membership.

Currently under construction, this website will be devoted to building support for a national merger of the NEA and AFT from the grassroots.  It will do so by attempting to stimulate a nation-wide discussion of the advantages such a merger would bring to our memberships and our nation.
